On Thursday Kim Kardashian West was at the White House to speak about a new initiative aimed at helping former inmates get jobs out of prison.
More from CNN article:
Building off of criminal justice reform legislation President Donald Trump signed last year, the White House announced plans Thursday to engage agencies, nonprofits and the private sector to provide former inmates “a second chance at success.”
Introducing Kardashian West, Trump called her “a good person,” adding that “soon she'll be one of the most successful lawyers.”
Trump also announced a slew of efforts at the White House event, including “working to allow rehabilitated citizens with a criminal record for both federal government jobs and affordable housing.”
Additionally, the Bureau of Prisons will be working to connect employers directly with former prisoners; the Labor Department is setting aside $2 million to underwrite companies hiring workers with criminal backgrounds; the Education Department is expanding a Pell Grant pilot program to prisoners; and the Energy Department is launching a program to educate individuals with a criminal background about energy sector jobs.
Kim’s speech:
Hi. It really is such an honour to be here, so thank you.
My whole journey with criminal justice reform started about a year ago when I came to see the President after speaking to Ivanka and Jared [Trump’s son-in-law] who fought for me get here. And I fled the case to Alice Johnson who the president granted clemency to and after that I spent so much time going to different prisons, because I really had no connection to anyone inside and I really just felt like for me I’m at the place of my life that I want to make a difference and just wanted to do the right thing.
But I didn’t know how or what to do or even what was really going on. And so, after visiting so many different prisons and really sitting down with lifers, with every situation you can possibly imagine, my heart just completely opened up and I just really wanted to do more.
So I started to study the law, which is, as you know, law school basically in California, and my attorneys are here today: Aaron and Jessica from Cut 50.
The best part of it is I learned so much that — I don’t even know if I’ll speak for anybody at law school — just basically working on memos and being the assistant to them, while the First Step Act was happening and (like) learning how bills get passed and working on it from the ground up. So to get the President’s support and to see it coming to fruition was magic, and the one thing that I just realized was that needed so much support that I’m happy to help and be supportive where I can was the reentry of people coming home and seeing the lack of support that really existed, whether it’s housing or the amount of letters that I get with people just needing transportation to jobs interviews, to jobs.
These people want to work. They want the best outcome and I’m so happy to be here today, amongst people that want the same thing and that really believe in supporting their reentry. So I’m happy to announce today that we have a rideshare partnership where formerly incarcerated people will be gifted gift cards, so that they can get rides to and from job interviews, to and from job’s family members.
And I just want to thank the President for really standing behind this issue, and seeing the compassion he’s had for criminal justice has been really remarkable. So I just want to thank all the organizations that are — you know — partnering with everything that’s going on and being really supportive, because it really does mean a lot for so many people that I’ve had the pleasure to speaking to.
I think the ultimate goal that everyone wants is to be safe and the more opportunity that we have, and that they have, and the support that we help give them, the safer that everyone will be. The recidivism rate will be continued to just get lower.
And so I’m thankful for everyone here that’s in support and so proud of this partnership with the rideshare organization. So thank you.
As mentioned in her speech, Kim visited the White House previously in 2018 to present Alice Johnson’s case, a mother-of-five, grandmother-of-six and great-grandmother of one, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of drug dealing in 1996. It was her first conviction and some of her co-conspirators testified her against in exchange for plea deals.
During her time in prison, Johnson has displayed exemplary behavior, become an ordained minister, a published writer and a prison tutor, a biography from Can Do Clemency reports. She had gained a large following of people pushing for her to be granted clemency. Part of this push saw her story turned into a short video, which went viral on social media.
Kim had her personal lawyer working on the case and talked to Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, who is pushing a criminal justice reform agenda.
During Alice’s birthday, Kim tweeted “Happy birthday Alice Marie Johnson. Today is for you”, just hours before meeting with President Trump in Washington.
Johnson was released on 6th June after having her sentence commuted.
Recently, Kim opened up about pursuing a career in law, telling Vogue, “I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more.” She’s currently studying for the “baby bar” — a one-day test that’s a mini version of the larger bar exam. She plans on taking the actual bar exam in 2022.
She wore Vetement’s ‘Oversized double-breasted jacket’ ($925).
